AHS Band Takes 3rd at AreaAlthough school is out, summer is here, and students are on their vacations, last week the Azle High School Band was still in competition. In May AHS’ top concert band, the “Honors Band”, entered a recording of three contest pieces in the Texas Music Educators Association State Contest. This is the concert band version of the UIL State Marching Contest. After advancing out of the region level of competition, Azle’s recording placed third at the Area Level. “There are seven Areas across the state”, explained AISD Fine Arts Facilitator Bob Hayes, “so ranking third at Area puts Azle in the top 21 programs in Class AAAA. There are 230 AAAA schools in Texas, so this is a strong showing for our community and our schools”. “This competition does not take place in front of a big ‘live audience’, but it is one of the most important parts of our curriculum”, Mr. Hayes added. The top two finishers in Azle’s Area were Frisco Centennial and The Colony. Other Area qualifiers were Plainview HS, Frenship (from West Texas), and Boswell HS. The top two finishers in each Area Competition will be judged head-to-head in San Antonio on July 20, and a state champion will be crowned. |
